Itto Ryu was founded during the Sengoku Era in the 1500s c.e. by Ito Ittosai. Ono-Ha Itto Ryu is the most widely practice of the surviving branches of Itto Ryu, with dojos in nearly all parts of Japan. It was also one of the most influential forces in the shaping of what became the sport of kendo at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. It was this connection that lead Ono-Ha Itto Ryu to spread throughout Japan. The influence of the ryu upon kendo is clear even today.

This incredible video by the Nihon Budokan, shows nearly the entire art as it is practiced today in Kyushu. Many people are surprised to learn that most of the kata in Ni Ten Ichi Ryu are for single sword. Only a few of the innermost kata feature the Musashi's famous 2 sword techniques.
