I156 KEIKO SHOKON

Keiko Shokon translates as "Reflecting deeply on the past, illuminate the present." In this, the 3rd volume in Diane Skoss's remarkable series "Classical Warrior Traditions of Japan" she does this beautifully. This volume includes Karl Friday's masterful translation of the Neko No Myoyujtsu one of my favorite parables of ancient Japan concerning the warrior. There is a wonderful interview with Nitta Suzuyo, head of Toda-ha Buko Ryu. William Bodiford has contributed an article which should put to rest the use and abuse of the term "soke" in the west, and George H. Bristol, Lieutenant Colonel, USMC has provided a rather modern practical consideration of koryu budo in his essay The Professional Perspective: Thoughts on the Koryu Bujutsu from a United States Marine. Other contributers include Ellis Amdur, Meik Skoss, Dave Lowry, Quintin Chambers, Liam Keeley and Ron Beaubien. This book is one that anyone who considers themselves serious about understanding the nature and history of Japanese budo, ancient or modern, must have and read and reread.

dSMJ2D Shinto Muso Ryu Jojutsu: Jutsugiron Dai Ichi Maki
$49.95
In this DVD Matsui Kenji Sensei demonstrates the outer kata of Shinto Muso Ryu Jojutsu, including the 12 Omote kata and the the 12 Chuden Kata.
Shinto Muso Ryu was founded by Muso Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi approximately 400 years. It focuses on the use of the jo, a 50 inch (128 cm), staff made of Japanese Oak. For centuries this style was a private art of the Kuroda clan in Kyushu, but since the 1930s it has been taught publicly in Japan. The strength of the art is shown by the fact that the jojutsu of the Japanese national police is based on Shinto Muso Ryu, and by the fact that many of the senior police instructors in the Tokyo region are also senior members of the ryu.
In addition to the outer kata of Shinto Muso Ryu, Kenji Sensei also demonstrates the kata of Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu, an sword art which has been associated with Shinto Muso Ryu for well over 300 years. Shinto Ryu consists of 8 kata dealing with tachi vs tachi, and 4 of kodachi vs tachi. The Shinto Ryu is one of several fuzoku ryu, or associated arts, of Shinto Muso Ryu. Other arts and weapons (not shown on this video) include Ikkaku Ryu Juttejutsu, Isshin Ryu Kusarigamajutsu, Uchida Ryu tanjojutsu, and hojojutsu.
