Kashima Shinryu
| Kashima Shinryu is one of the oldest martial arts styles in Japan, dating to the early part of the 1500s. It's history goes back nearly 500 years in an unbroken lineage. The current Soke is Kunii Michitomo, the 20th generation of the Kunii family to hold this post. The head teacher, or Shihanke, is Seki Humitake, who trained under Kunii Zen'ya and was awarded the title of Shihanke in the 1960s. |

Kashima Shinryu is one the most complete of the classical Japanese ryuha, or martial styles. It teaches a variety of weapons, including kenjutsu, battojutsu, jujutsu, yari, naginata, bo and others. vKSRBAT1 Kashima Shinryu Battojutsu vol. 1 Kashima Shinryu is one of the oldest surviving martial ryu in Japan. As such, it developed and grew over the centuries in response to changes in the nature of combat in Japan. One of these changes was from the armored combat of the battlefield during the Sengoku Period (prior to 1600) to the combat in regular clothes during the peaceful centuries of the Tokugawa Period (1600-1878). To adapt to this sort of combat, Kashima Shinryu developed a set of battojutsu, or sword drawing techinques. This tape shows the first half of the Kashima Shinryu Battojutsu syllabus. 60 minutes. vKSRNAG Kashima Shinryu Naginatajutsu Kashima Shinryu is one of the best examples of Sogo Bujutsu, or "General Budo." "Sogo Bujutsu" means that the ryuha incorporated a wide variety of weapons and skills in its curriculum. As a sogo bujutsu, Kashima Shinryu includes not only the sword arts of kenjutsu and battojutsu, but also a number of other armed and unarmed arts. This video shows the naginatajutsu of Kashima Shinryu. The naginata was a long hafted weapon that looked something like a sword on the end of a spear pole. It was a devastatingly powerful weapon, and this video explores how it is employed in KSR, including the Kihon Naginata and the Tachiai Naginata sets. 60 minutes. Japanese language.
