The 10 kata now known as the "Kendo No Kata" were created early in the 20th century by some of the finest kenjutsu practitioners then living. Originally created as a means of teaching the fundamentals of Japanese sword to students in the Japanese school system, they were lated adopted as the official kata of the All Japan Kendo Federation in the 1950s. On this incredible DVD Takano Sasaburo and Nakayama Hakudo, to of the greatest swordsmen of the early 20th century and members of the committee that finalized what were then known as the Dai Nihon Teikoku Kendo Kata, demonstrate these powerful kenjutsu forms before the Emperor of Japan in 1929. Saimura Goro and Michida , two of the finest swordsmen of the middle part of the 20th century, are shown demonstrating the same kata in 1953. You can see slight differences in the two demonstrations, but it is also clear that the fundamentals remain the same. This is an increble historical resource through which you can see some of the changes that have taken place in the last 100.
