Iai-jutsu, also known as iaido, battodo, nukiuchi, among other names in old Japan, is the art of drawing and using the live blade. Sekiguchi Takaaki is the 21st head of his line of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, as recognized by the Nihon Budokan. In this excellent DVD, he introduces the art of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu. Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu is an ancient art, dating the the mid 1500's and includes many sets of kata for training in the use of the katana. Some of these kata deal with the drawing and use of the live blade, and other teach the principles of timing, spacing and strategy. In this DVD, Sekiguchi Soke introduces and teaches the first set of kata, called the Shoden. This is the foundation of the art, where all of the fundamentals are taught. He covers the basic techniques of handling the sword before moving into teaching the 12 kata of the Shoden. Finally, Sekiguchi Soke demonstrates test cutting, the practice of checking your control of the sword by cutting targets.
